Winterizing Your Air Conditioner

Proper end-of-season care prevents damage and extends lifespan.

Window ACs

Best to remove and store indoors.

  1. Unplug 24 hours before removal
  2. Remove carefully
  3. Clean filter and exterior
  4. Store upright, dry location
  5. Cover with breathable cloth

Portable ACs

  1. Drain water from tank
  2. Run fan-only to dry internals
  3. Clean filter
  4. Remove window kit and hose
  5. Store upright, dry

Central AC Outdoor Units

Built for weather. Don't need covering.

  • Clear debris (2-ft clearance)
  • Plywood on top for debris protection
  • Turn off circuit breaker

Mini-Split Outdoor Units

Heat pumps run year-round. Don't cover or turn off.
